Clermont vs Saracens Review

Saracens put up a strong performance on Sunday but ill-discipline cost them the game as they lost 24-21 against Clermont.

The visitors had a strong start as captain Owen Farrell kicked over two penalties and converted a Ben Spencer try to send the Men in Black into an early lead. Clermont were soon hot on their heels, with Morgan Parra and Scott Spedding combining to add four penalties to drag their side to within one point at the break.

The second-half opened with another penalty from French scrum-half Parra, giving the home side the lead for the first time in the game. Farrell responded in kind with a converted penalty of his own just shy of the hour mark.

Saracens were then gifted an opportunity as Nick Abendanon was sent off shortly for bashing into George Kruis at the restart.

With their opposition a man down, the Men in Black broke through Clermont’s defence with Alex Lozowski cutting through the ranks following a great pass from Farrell.

Any hopes of maintaining their lead were quickly dashed however, as Parra and Spedding kicked late penalties to hand Clermont a fantastic victory.

Saracens, the defending champions, are now third in the pool and are facing the possibility of not making it out of the knockout stages if they do not win their next two games.
