Name: Cai Evans
National Team: Wales
With a famous father who captained Wales, played in seven Tests for the Lions and is a household name throughout the rugby world, it’s fair to say there is a lot of expectation resting on Cai Evans shoulders – not that he is letting the pressure get to him!
His dad is Ieuan Evans MBE and is the fourth highest try scorer for Wales, but Evans junior wants to make his own name in the game. After an impressive World Rugby U20 Championship for Wales, in which Cai Evans finished 3rd in most points scored (46) and 2nd in most penalties scored (10), Evans junior is keen to build his own reputation, both for club and country.
Opting to play out wide and take on the responsibility of goal-kicking, Evans junior possesses an excellent kick and an intelligence on how to execute a game-plan far beyond his years.
With Ospreys head coach, Allen Clarke, pondering giving opportunities to the youngsters who performed so well for Wales in the World Rugby U20s Championship, could this be a breakthrough season for Cai? We wouldn’t bank against it, especially with the departure of Sam Davies’ to the Dragons and the World Cup commitments of Gareth Anscombe. It’s likely that Luke Price will start the season above him, but Evans junior will be sure to push him all the way and we look forward to seeing more of the player in this coming season!
