Name: Lewis Ludlam
DOB: 08/12/1995
Positions: Openside Flanker
Club: Northampton Saints
National Team: England

After breaking into the Northampton side last season, at the age of 23, Lewis Ludlam now finds himself in Eddie Jones’ World Cup Squad, receiving the call up only 24 hours after his England debut. It’s fair to say it’s been a remarkable 12 months for the openside flanker!

After captaining his school team, as well as stints at both Ipswich and Colchester Rugby clubs, Ludlam signed for Northampton Saints in 2013, and after impressing in the Under-18s, moved up to the Senior Academy a few years later.

Ludlam’s all action displays in his breakthrough season for Saints caught the eye of Eddie Jones, who called up the uncapped player for England’s preliminary World Cup training squad. Named on the bench for the game against Wales, fate was on his side, as a withdrawal from Sam Underhill handed him his full England debut. Ludlam impressed, doing the uncomplicated jobs well, with 100% effort and commitment. He impressed Jones so much that when the England Squad for the World Cup was announced the very next day, Ludlam had made the list.

It is a remarkable rise for a player who, 12 months ago, was worried about his club future and whether he would even be offered a new contract with Northampton. Not that he is letting the fame go to his head! It was reported in the national press that in the run up to being given the news that he would be starting against Wales, Ludlam remembered a promise he made 13 years ago to his primary school teacher, that if he ever had the opportunity to play for England he would get her tickets to his first game. True to his word, he managed to track her down and supplied her with tickets and posed for pre-match photos!

A man who is as humble as he is talented, we are looking forward to seeing more of Lewis Ludlam in the coming World Cup and 2019/20 Premiership season.
